Hanging up the hat

Hello. It’s been quite a while. I’ve been meaning to post for a while, but I’ve been too busy trying to get GNOME 3.14 finished up, with Wayland all done for you. I also fixed the last stability issue in GNOME, and now both X11 and Wayland are stable as a rock. If you’ve ever had GNOME freeze up on you when switching windows or Alt-Tabbing, well, that’s fixed, and that was actually the same bug that was crashing Wayland. This was my big hesitation in shipping Wayland, and with that out of the way, I’m really happy. Please try out GNOME 3.13.90 on Wayland and let me know how it goes.

I promise to post a few more Xplain articles before the end of the year, and I have another blog post coming up about GPU rendering that you guys are going to enjoy. Promise. Even though, well…

Changes

I have a new job. Next Tuesday, the 26th, is my final day at Red Hat, and after that I’m going to be starting at Endless Mobile. Working at Red Hat has been a wonderful, life-changing experience, and it was a really hard decision to leave the incredible team that made GNOME what it is today. Thank you, each and every one of you. All of you are incredible, and I hope I keep working with you every single day. It would be an absolute shame if I wasn’t.

Endless Mobile is a fantastic new startup that is focused on shipping GNOME to real end users all across the world, and that’s too exciting of an opportunity to pass by. We, the GNOME community, can really improve the lives of people in developing countries. Let’s make it happen.

I’ll still be around on IRC, mailing lists, reddit, blogging, all the usual places. I’m not planning on leaving the GNOME community. If you have any questions at all, feel free to ask.

Cheers,
  Jasper

  1. > Endless Mobile is a fantastic new startup that is focused on shipping GNOME to real end users all across the world,

What does it mean? I thought I was a real end-user with my Gnome 3.4.2. on my laptop.

    Congratulation anyway. =)

  2. Noooo! I was seeing that coming at some point… What you’ve been doing for the past years has been so awesome, and with kind help all the time! Gnome would not be what it is today without your intense involvement. Anyway, congrats and have fun in your next job! I’m so happy you won’t leave the community ;)

  3. If you jave fixed gnome freezing then thank you thank you thank you !

Its really tricky when gnome shell freezes, I have no idea where in the stack the problem is or who to report bugs to…. some sort of tool would.be super useful here.

  4. I’m really happy for you Jasper, and excited about the potential of what you can accomplish at endlessm! Thanks for all the hard work you’ve put into the Shell and Wayland as part of RH. Best of luck forward!

  5. I have been using GNOME on Wayland for a while and the only thing that disturbs me is jerky mouse which usually happens during animations.

    • Sorry I should have asked this already in OP. @Jasper do you know if mouse jerkiness is a known bug and if there is already fix available or coming soon?

Otherwise GNOME3 on Wayland works beautifully. Thanks for your hard work.

  6. hello :)

In the past, on Planet GNOME, I believe to remember reading other people to leave their jobs to join Endless Mobile. As a regular user, I hear a lot about Red Hat contributions, but I have no memory to have already met those of Endless Mobile. They contribute well to the project, or free software in general? Even if the employer is different, so you will continue to work full time on GNOME? I did not find anything about it on their website.

In any case, thank you for everything you have done so far.

Sorry for my really poor english :(

    • Endless employs both Cosimo Cecchi and Emmanuele Bassi who both still contribute to upstream GNOME and upstream GTK+. I won’t be working full-time on upstream GNOME, but since Endless uses GNOME tech, anything I do that is upstreamable will be upstreamed.

  7. Thanks for the immense amount of work you’ve accomplished. It’s hard to think of you as a single person, because you’re more like a development team RH just lost. Good luck with your future endevours!
